Since Todd first walked through our doors he's shown consistent improvement in his body composition and his performance - largely due to his willingness to be patient, put the work in and enjoy the company of his fellow CFD-ers. He also has a remarkable ability to push himself when it's just Todd vs Todd. Whether he's going solo through a WOD or with a group, he always puts in a Max For The Day kind of effort.
Another reason for his success is his ability to decide what CF and eating right mean to him, thereby avoiding extremes and subsequent burnout in favor of a longer term middle way.
Here's what Todd has to say about the Nutrition Challenge and his experience at CFD thus far:
My Zone Experience
I have 2 little kids and make my own beer so I thought maybe this "diet" challenge wasn't going to work, or at least realize the success one might hope. But I have to say it was quite easy. Saying that I'll also mention I wasn't hard core when it came to the diet. As I mentioned, I make beer and wasn't giving that up, at least not for this challenge. There are a few goals and restriction I made for myself, I tried to keep it simple.
1. Used the CrossFit Zone handout as a guide. It was quite useful and made things pretty simple. After a week or so you pretty much know what you're eating and if you should be eating.
2. Cut out fast food.
3. Stay ahead of the mental game. The mental game is harder than the physical component and I'm a strong believer you'll get better results if you're right in the head. For me it was of course a nice cold home brew and Friday night homemade pizza and movie with the wife and kids.
4. And of course you can't forget - GO TO THE GYM! I also stepped up my frequency from 2-3 days per week to 4-5 days per week. So you don't have to be a hardcore fire breather to get results but you do need to need to put in the work.
That's about it in a nutshell. Thanks again for the opportunity. NOW BRING IT!
My CFD Experience
So Kitch asked me to write a little testimonial...I'm not really sure where to start so I figure I'll give a little background for those who don't know me already. When I joined CFD 6 months ago I didn't really know what to expect. I have a decent athletic background so I had to have some expectation...right? I wanted to get back into shape, what happened after that was open for discussion.
The first month was tough. Getting to know new faces and names, sizing up the competition at the daily WOD, and learning why Angie will cripple the average human being (she did it to me twice). All a little overwhelming at times. But then month 2 rolls around, I started feeling better and wasn't brutally sore after every workout. I was only going 2-3 days a week but enough to experience some change. By the end of month 3 I had completed a handful of benchmark workouts and started to RX a few as well. I was feeling pretty confident and stoked at the progress made in only 3 months. I lost 8-10lbs and on some workouts I was even keeping up with Kitch (shameless plug).
Then the Zone/Paleo challenge began. I upped my frequency to 4-5 day per week went into the "Zone"! 3 months later I was 12lbs lighter, gained 8lbs of muscle and lost 10% body fat. Holy Cow! Are your freaking serious. This shit works.
What I enjoy most is the group atmosphere, and CFD has a great one! I've made some great friends thus far. There's always someone having a good day or a bad day and sometimes it's me. It great to be able to feed off that energy and either get pumped or help pump up someone else.
Anyways...I've really had a blast the past 6 months. It's a special group that I see growing tremendously over the next few years [and beyond! ~editor].
